What Does Microneedling Actually Improve?
Updated: Sep 30

SKIN REJUVENATION
Microneedling is a collagen-focused treatment that creates controlled micro-injuries in the skin. The repair response that follows can gradually improve selected texture concerns.
Texture and pores are common goals
Microneedling may be useful for enlarged-looking pores, rough texture and fine lines. It can also be part of a treatment plan for mild to moderate acne scars, depending on scar type and depth.
Acne scars need to be identified correctly
Not all acne scars have the same shape or depth. Rolling, boxcar and ice-pick scars can respond differently, and active acne should be considered separately from old textural scarring.
A customized plan may use microneedling alone or combine it with other approaches depending on the scar pattern.
What about pores?
Pores cannot be permanently erased, but their appearance can become less prominent when surrounding texture, oil balance and collagen support improve.
This is why pore treatment is usually framed as refinement rather than elimination.
Results are gradual
The treatment does not add collagen instantly. Remodeling continues after visible redness has faded, which is why results are usually judged over several weeks rather than immediately after the appointment.
Depth should match the concern
Different facial areas and concerns require different settings. Going deeper is not automatically better. The goal is enough controlled stimulation to support remodeling without creating unnecessary injury.
When RF microneedling may make more sense
If texture concerns appear alongside laxity, RF microneedling may be considered because it adds radiofrequency energy below the surface. At MajorGlow, we compare SkinPen and Virtue RF based on the skin, goal and downtime tolerance.
How many sessions may be needed
Many patients benefit from a series rather than a single session, especially for acne scars or more established texture concerns. The number and spacing depend on skin response, treatment depth and how much improvement is realistic for the concern.
What to expect between sessions
Redness often settles before remodeling is complete. The skin can continue changing for weeks, so we avoid judging the final result too early or repeating treatment before the skin has had enough time to respond.
When to reassess
After a series, the next step should depend on what has actually improved. If texture is better but laxity remains, RF microneedling may be worth discussing. If the goal has been reached, maintenance can be occasional rather than automatic.
