INJECTABLES

The masseter muscles sit along the sides of the jaw and are active during chewing and clenching. In some people, these muscles become prominent or overactive. Neuromodulator treatment can reduce selected muscle activity, but the aesthetic and functional goals should be separated and assessed carefully.

Why the masseter can become prominent

Muscle size can be influenced by genetics, habitual clenching, chewing patterns, and other factors. A broad lower face can also come from the underlying jawbone or soft tissue rather than the muscle itself.

Only a muscular contribution is expected to change from neuromodulator treatment.

How neuromodulator treatment works

Botulinum toxin products reduce signaling to selected portions of the muscle. As activity decreases, some patients notice less muscle prominence over time because a less active muscle can gradually reduce in bulk.

The change is not immediate and the degree of slimming varies.

Jaw tension and facial slimming are not the same goal

Someone seeking relief from clenching symptoms has a different primary concern from someone seeking a narrower lower face. Jaw pain, headaches, tooth damage, and temporomandibular disorders may require dental or medical evaluation rather than aesthetic treatment alone.

Neuromodulator treatment should not be presented as a universal solution for every cause of jaw discomfort.

Why dose and balance matter

The masseter is important for chewing. Excessive weakening can affect function or create an imbalanced appearance, particularly if neighboring muscles continue to pull normally.

Treatment should preserve useful strength while addressing the intended concern.

How facial shape can change

If the masseter contributes significantly to lower-face width, gradual reduction in muscle bulk can make the jaw appear less square. If bone is the dominant source of width, the visual change may be limited.

This is why palpation and movement assessment matter before treatment.

Why chewing function matters during follow-up

Because the masseter contributes to chewing, follow-up should include functional questions as well as aesthetic assessment. Excessive weakness, altered bite sensation, or compensatory use of neighboring muscles may indicate that future treatment should be adjusted.

A treatment that creates a slimmer appearance but impairs useful function is not a successful endpoint.

Facial slimming can reveal other contours

As the masseter becomes less prominent, the shape of the jawbone, chin, and lower-face soft tissue becomes more visible. In some patients, slimming the muscle can make preexisting jowling or a narrow chin more noticeable.

This is not necessarily a complication, but it is a reason to assess the entire lower face before treatment rather than focusing only on muscle size.

Why the treatment goal changes the plan

A patient seeking relief from clenching is asking a different question from someone primarily interested in reducing lower-face width. Muscle size, tenderness, bite symptoms, facial proportions, and baseline asymmetry all influence whether neuromodulator treatment is appropriate.

Jaw pain can also have dental, joint, or other medical causes. Persistent or significant symptoms may need evaluation beyond an aesthetic treatment setting.

Why facial slimming develops gradually

The neuromodulator effect on muscle activity develops before a visible reduction in muscle bulk. Changes in lower-face width therefore tend to appear gradually rather than immediately after injection.

As the masseter becomes less prominent, existing cheek volume, jowling, or jawline anatomy may become more noticeable.

What masseter BOTOX® can and cannot change

Masseter neuromodulator treatment works on muscle, not bone. The most appropriate plan depends on whether the main concern is muscle size, clenching, jaw pain, or facial shape, and those goals should not be assumed to be the same.
